Overview
"A network consists of two or more computers that are linked in order to share resources (such as printers and CDs), exchange files, or allow electronic communications. The computers on a network may be linked through cables, telephone lines, radio waves, satellites, or infrared light beams" (Winkelman, 2013).
Networks require hardware and software. Hardware is the actual computer, monitor, wires, printers and servers that will be within a networks. Software is anything you download onto your computer, like Microsoft Office, Geometer's Sketchpad, TI-Interactive, Games, iTunes, or Dreamweaver. Hardware and software require operating systems, or OS for short. The hardware of a computer network can be configured in several different manners. The way a network of computers is set up can be a Lan, Wan, or a WLan for example.
The diagram you will see throughout this virtual field trip (as shown below), demonstrates several options on how you can set up your own area network.
